The death toll from flooding in Poland has risen to 15 following days of heavy rain that forced thousands of people to flee their homes, the interior minister says. “The death toll has risen to 15,” Interior Minister Jerzy Miller said on Monday. He warned that flood barriers are in poor condition in many parts of the country as the worst floods in over a decade hit the country last week. Rescue efforts are underway across Poland and teams from some European countries are already on the ground to aid the rescue operation. Prime Minister Donald Tusk says the government will provide financial assistance to the victims so they can rebuild their homes and lives. “At tomorrow’s cabinet meeting, I will present a draft law on financing this aid. Help for individuals, for families plus aid for infrastructure will of course be a multi-billion-dollar sum, which we want to spend not just this budget year but also in future years,” AFP quoted Tusk as saying. Reports say the floods have caused damage estimated at more than $2.4 billion.
